Why I chose franchising
I was CHIPS Group Area Manager and saw the success of the franchises. After talking to Nik Agar and Don McCabe I decided to open a store myself.
What I did before taking up a franchise
I had worked for CHIPS for 14 years, starting as a Saturday lad when I was at college. Over the years I worked my way up to store manager and then Group area Manager, running the day-to-day operations of the six company stores. Owning my own franchise was the next logical step.
How I raised the finance
I spoke to Julie Waites, CHIPS franchise consultant and she recommended the NatWest Bank, as it has specialists in franchise finance. NatWest's business manager Keith Whittaker sorted everything out for me.
The training and support I received from my franchisor
I didn't need any training in the operational side as I had worked for the company for 14 years. However, I did receive help from CHIPS locating property and CHIPS sorted out all the legalities. CHIPS also arranged the shop design, shop fit and stock levels. All I had to do was take the keys and walk in. Once I was up and running CHIPS helped me with the paperwork and business side of running my own store.
The challenges I have faced
Although I have managed the company-owned stores for quite a few years it feels totally different having my own shop. Paying all the bills, doing the accounts and paying staff is all new to me, but it gets easier every week.
My advice to someone thinking of buying their first franchise
The advantage of a franchise is that you are following a tried-and-tested system with all the support you need. CHIPS has learned from its mistakes over the years so the franchises don't make the same ones - this reduces the risks of owning your own business. It is hard work and can be quite stressful, but the rewards are there too.
My plans for the future
Having recently opened my store all my energy is spent establishing the shop and building up custom. Once I am satisfied I will consider my future which could involve playing a greater role in the running of the company stores once again.
