Why I chose franchising
Having previously owned a successful franchise, I decided that when I wanted to do something new another franchise was the logical answer.
What I did before taking up a franchise
I worked in the Purchasing departments of two electronics companies before I originally joined franchising. I was a Materials Manager for an international company before I was made redundant & then decided that I wanted to work for myself. Before my CHIPS franchise I had a greeting card franchise for 10 years.
How I raised the finance
I sold my previous business & raised the balance through a bank loan.
The training and support I received from my franchisor
The training was very much "hands on" & proved to be invaluable for when I opened my shop. Everyone was very willing & nothing was too much trouble. The ongoing support has also been invaluable with everyone from top to bottom always at the end of the telephone line to offer encouragement & advice when it's been needed.
The challenges I have faced
First of all owning & being responsible for a new shop. Employing & then motivating staff to do things my way. Working six days a week. Always wanting to keep the customer happy even if they are already happy! Remaining motivated when there are quiet periods. Trying not to worry about the competition. Keeping on top of the paperwork as there is much more to be done than in my previous business although CHIPS make it easier than if I were on my own!
My advice to someone thinking of buying their first franchise
Make sure it's for you. Is it something that you can foresee wanting to do in five years time? Do your research, talk to existing franchisees & if possible visit them in their working environment to see if the franchise is what you thought it was. If there are other franchises doing the same thing then check them out as well & compare not only the product but also the management & their procedures. Find out what the total cost will be if royalties are to be paid & find out what their expectations of you are, as some targets are quite demanding.
My plans for the future
To be successful, to be the best game shop in town & then possibly open another store.
