David Jarvis - CHIPS Orpington
Why I chose franchising?
I chose franchising because I wanted to work for myself, but also have the added security of a proven company behind me.
What I did before taking up franchising?
For the last seven years I have been working for video games retailer, Gamestation. After starting as a sales assistant I worked my way up through the ranks to field management, overseeing up to 20 stores in the south east area.
How I raised the finance:
I managed to raise the finance from personal funds and a very friendly bank manager.
The training and support I received from CHIPS:
have been given very good support from my first meeting in the north-east, through to my store opening day and beyond. There is always somebody you can speak to if you need help or advice. Having worked in the industry I can see the full benefits the CHIPS package has to offer, from its sale or return policy through to the EPOS system.
The challenges I have faced:
After working for Gamestation I had the retail video games knowledge and a lot of retail experience so I didn't have to go through that learning curve. However, the main challenge for me has been to learn the accounts side of the business as I am now self employed.
My advice to someone thinking of buying their first franchise:
Be patient and be prepared to work very hard. Running your own business is not a "get rich quick" scheme. You must be committed and hopefully the rewards will come.
My plans for the future:
I will be concentrating on growing the business and building the customer base. If all goes well I would like to look into opening a second Chips franchise in the future.
